Catalyst/Hardener 2x125ML
Rayplex Catalyst #375 is commonly known as MEKP (Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide). This catalyst is added to polyester resins, casting, tooling, vinyl ester and ISO resins as well as gelcoats. As the catalyst mixes with the resin or gelcoat, a exothermic chemical reaction occurs, creating heat which cures (hardens) the resin or Gelcoat. Its role is to trigger the resin to solidify from liquid form. Typically ratios of 1%-3%, depending on the product.
Dispensing
It's crucial to handle MEKP cautiously due to its nature as an organic peroxide, requiring appropriate Personal Protective Equipment. Always were gloves and goggles when handling or dispensing the product.
Here's how it's used:
- Catalyst Role: MEKP initiates and speeds up the curing of polyester and vinyl ester resins, creating a durable composite.
- Mixing: It's mixed with resin before application, following specific ratios to control curing and processing time as recommended by resin manufacturers.
- Curing: Once mixed, MEKP triggers a chemical reaction that crosslinks and solidifies the resin. Generally the warmer the resin the faster it will cure. Cold temperatures can greatly increase the cure time.
- Safety: Handling MEKP requires caution due to its flammability and potential for toxic fumes. Always use protective gear and work in a ventilated area, adhering to safety guidelines.
- Shelf Life: MEKP has a limited shelf life and can lose effectiveness over time. Old Catalyst is not as reactive as new. Resin types, environmental conditions, and specific applications can influence curing outcomes.
- For very hot conditions Rayplex has slow Catalyst #376 Do not use this with Gelcoat.
